About the data

sch.today answers one question about each secondary school in England: where does it lead? Ofsted grades, league tables and catchment maps say whether a school is “good”. The Department for Education also publishes, for every school, where its leavers actually went the following year, which subjects pupils sat and what they achieved. Those figures sit in a dozen spreadsheets; here they are on one page per school, next to the same figures for the local authority and England.

All sources are published under the Open Government Licence v3.0. sch.today is an independent project and is not affiliated with the Department for Education or Ofsted. It holds no personal data about any pupil: every figure is a published school-level statistic.

How to read the measures

Destinations after Year 11

The share of pupils who finished Key Stage 4 in 2023 and were in a “sustained” destination — the same place for at least two terms (October to March) of the following academic year. Categories: the school’s own sixth form, a sixth form college, a further education college, other education, an apprenticeship, employment, and “no sustained destination”. Destinations are published two years after the exams, so they describe a slightly earlier cohort than the results on the same page.

The same measure for students who finished 16–18 study in 2023. “University” means UK higher education. The share reaching the most selective universities (the top third by entry requirements) is published for students who completed level 3 qualifications, so its denominator differs from the other columns.

Attainment 8 and Progress 8

Attainment 8 is the average points a pupil scored across eight qualifications including English and maths. Progress 8, which adjusts for pupils’ starting points, is not available for 2025 or 2026 because the cohorts had no Key Stage 2 tests in 2020 and 2021. Where prior attainment is published we show the share of pupils who arrived with high or low Key Stage 2 results so readers can weigh Attainment 8 accordingly.

Subjects

For each GCSE subject we show entries as a share of the Year 11 cohort and the share of entries graded 7–9 and 4–9, next to the England figures computed from all published school entries. For A levels we show entries as a share of A level students. Combined Science double award grades such as 7-6 are counted by their lower grade. Grades are suppressed by DfE where numbers are small, so shares on some pages are computed from a subset of entries.

Suppressed and missing figures

Where DfE suppresses a value (small cohorts, or “NE” for no entries) we show “—”. Independent schools appear only where they submit results to DfE; destination measures are not published for them. When a school converts to an academy or merges it receives a new registration number, and the last year of results is published under the old one; we attach those results to the successor school and say so on the page.

Coverage

6,055 school pages, including all 3,419 state-funded secondary schools in England open as at 19 September 2026, plus independent schools, colleges and special schools with published Key Stage 4 or 16–18 data. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland publish different data and are not covered.

Updates

Pages are rebuilt when DfE publishes new performance tables (autumn), revised destination measures (winter) and when Ofsted updates its monthly management information. Every page shows the dates of the data it uses.
